What is an IP Address?

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. Think of it as a digital postal address — it allows data to be sent to and from the correct device. There are two main versions: IPv4 (e.g., 192.168.1.1) which uses 32-bit addresses, and IPv6 (e.g., 2001:0db8::1) which uses 128-bit addresses to support the growing number of connected devices.

Public vs. Private IP Addresses

A public IP is the address assigned to your network by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). It is visible to the outside world and is used to identify your network on the internet. A private IP is used within your local network (e.g., 192.168.x.x) and is not directly accessible from the internet. Your router uses NAT (Network Address Translation) to map private addresses to your single public IP.

How Does IP Geolocation Work?

IP geolocation maps an IP address to a physical location using databases maintained by regional internet registries and commercial providers. When an IP block is assigned, registration data (region, ISP, organization) is recorded. Geolocation services aggregate this data to estimate the country, city, and approximate coordinates of an IP. Note that accuracy varies — it's typically accurate at the city level but not precise enough to identify a specific street address.

Privacy & Accuracy Notice

This tool uses third-party APIs to retrieve IP information. No personal data is stored or tracked. Geolocation results are approximate and should not be used for precise physical location tracking. VPN and proxy users may see the location of their VPN server rather than their actual location. IP data is provided for informational purposes only.
