Chess Master - Help & Rules
How to Play
Chess is a strategic board game played between two players. The objective is to checkmate your opponent's king.
Basic Rules
- Setup: Each player starts with 16 pieces on opposite sides of the board
- Turns: White always moves first, then players alternate turns
- Winning: The game is won by checkmating the opponent's king
- Draw: The game can end in a draw through stalemate, insufficient material, or repetition
Piece Movements
- ♔ King: Moves one square in any direction
- ♕ Queen: Moves any number of squares diagonally, horizontally, or vertically
- ♖ Rook: Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically
- ♗ Bishop: Moves any number of squares diagonally
- ♘ Knight: Moves in an L-shape: 2 squares in one direction, then 1 square perpendicular
- ♙ Pawn: Moves forward one square, captures diagonally, can move two squares on first move
Special Rules
- Castling: King and rook can castle if neither has moved and path is clear
- En Passant: Special pawn capture when opponent's pawn moves two squares
- Promotion: Pawns reaching the opposite end promote to any piece (except king)
- Check: When the king is under attack, it must be resolved immediately
- Checkmate: When the king is in check and cannot escape

Controls
- Click a piece to select it (highlighted in green)
- Click a valid square to move the piece (shown in light green)
- New Game: Start a fresh game
- Switch Mode: Toggle between two-player and AI modes
- Reset: Clear the board and start over
