About Personal Accounting

Personal Accounting is a personal ledger that runs in the browser. You set up account types, accounts, income and expense categories and concepts, then record income, expenses, transfers between accounts and balance adjustments. Reports and charts turn those movements into a balance, a monthly result and a budget comparison. All records are stored in the browser's IndexedDB on your device; there is no account, no cloud and no server for your financial data.

What it does

  • Account types with an effect on the total. Create types such as asset, liability or excluded and decide whether their balances add, subtract or stay out of the general total. A type that still has accounts cannot be deleted until those accounts are moved to another type, so a group cannot disappear by accident.
  • Setup in four steps. Account types first, then accounts, then income and expense categories with a monthly budget, and finally the concepts inside each category. The Help view explains the order and what each piece is for.
  • Movements with context. Record income, expenses and transfers, choose a category and concept, and add a note. Adjustments correct an account balance directly, for example after a bank fee. The transaction list filters by text, type and date and shows the net of the filtered rows; transfers are counted separately because they do not change the total.
  • Reports that add up. A balance report at any cutoff date groups accounts by type, shows subtotals and a general total, and includes accounts whose type was removed at face value. Category reports compare spending with the monthly budget; the concept report breaks the same movements down by concept. Uncategorised income and expenses are kept apart instead of being counted as expenses.
  • Charts for the whole picture. Account balances, monthly income and expenses, income versus expenses, results by category, expense distribution and top concepts, with a date range and account or category selection.
  • Backup, offline use and two languages. Export a JSON backup and import it later. The app installs as a PWA and keeps working offline after the first load. The interface switches between Spanish and English, and the theme can be light, dark or automatic.

What it does not do

  • No bank connection or automatic import. Every movement is entered by hand. There is no bank sync, no CSV or OFX import, no receipt scanning and no OCR.
  • No cloud, account or multi-device sync. The database lives in this browser profile. A JSON backup is the only way to move it to another device or browser, and importing a backup replaces all current data.
  • No currency symbol or multi-currency. Amounts are plain numbers formatted for the interface language (es-MX or en-US). There is no currency choice, symbol, conversion or exchange rate; use one currency per database.
  • No recurring transactions or reminders. There are no scheduled entries, subscriptions or notifications. You add each movement when it happens.
  • No CSV or PDF export. The backup is JSON. The reports have a Print button, so you can print them or save them as PDF from the browser's print dialog. There are no attachments or receipt images.
  • No encryption, password or business accounting. Anyone who can open this browser profile can read the records, and the JSON backup is not encrypted. It is a personal ledger, not double-entry accounting: no invoices, taxes, payroll, inventory, investment tracking or loan amortisation.

Data, backup and offline use

The database is IndexedDB in this browser. Clearing the site data, using private mode or changing browser or profile deletes or hides it. Export a JSON backup regularly and keep it somewhere safe. When you import a backup, the app replaces the current database, so export first if you are not sure. Deleting an account also deletes the transactions and adjustments tied to it, after a confirmation; there is no undo. The app shell and chart library are cached by a service worker, so the screens keep working offline after the first load. The optional Ufumbuzi menu in the header is loaded from the site and needs a connection the first time.

Why use it

It is a free, ad-free ledger for people who want to see their accounts, spending and budget without handing the data to a finance service. The trade-off is manual entry and the responsibility for backups: there is no support desk that can recover a deleted browser database.
